Good morning,
presents the main news from the world of wine, wineries, viticulture, and Italian and international oenology.
A concise overview of Italian wineries, wine and oenology, international markets, and events , with particular attention to the changes affecting production, consumption, sustainability, and promotion.
ITALIAN WINERIES
Tenute Folonari presents Campo al Mare Metodo Classico Rosé Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari Tenute launches Campo al Mare Metodo Classico Rosé Brut Millesimato 2021, produced from Syrah in Bolgheri and aged for approximately 41 months on the lees. This limited production aims to offer a fresh interpretation of the Tuscan coastal terroir.
Candido is reborn in Salento with the Paolo Leo family. The Paolo Leo family, who acquired the historic Candido winery in San Donaci in 2025, is relaunching the brand, maintaining its name, labels, and local identity. The goal is to revive a company that contributed to the spread of Negroamaro and Salento wine.
Castello di Uviglie: the future passes to the new generation. Francesca and Davide Bonzano, at the helm of the historic Castello di Uviglie in Monferrato, have been recognized as Young Producers of the Year by Gambero Rosso’s 2027 Italian Wine Guide. The estate has documented grape cultivation since 1491.
Tenuta Crodarossa: From PIWI to a Family Project. Founded in 2013 in Colderù, in the Belluno area, Tenuta Crodarossa has become a winemaking project rooted in the family, the terroir, and resistant varieties. The winery is a member of the PIWI Veneto network and the Consorzio Vini Coste del Feltrino.
La Cappuccina: organic, family, and hospitality in Soave. This historic estate, dating back to 1890, embodies a model in which organic production, hospitality, family culture, and the local area become an integral part of the company’s identity.
Tenuta Santa Maria: the history of Amarone and hospitality. Giovanni and Guglielmo Bertani continue their family’s journey in the Valpolicella Classica area, uniting vineyards, historic cellars, wine culture, and hospitality.
Ampeleia and the 2026 harvest. In the Upper Maremma, the harvest arrived early after a long, hot summer. However, Ampeleia reports good grape quality and no significant declines in production, attributing this resilience to over twenty years of work focusing on altitude, biodiversity, and land management.
Passo delle Tortore is changing the winery’s language. With the “Stai al Passo” project, the winery aims to transform wine into an experience that dialogues with art, music, culture, nature, and wellness, seeking new ways to engage with the public.
Franciacorta and Generational Transition Celeste Dotti, born in 1992, now leads the family-run San Cristoforo winery in Erbusco, following the generational transition that took place in 2019. At the heart of the project are innovation, territorial identity, and a more accessible wine language.
L’Andana: Possible Transfer to the De Santis Family According to press rumors, the Tuscan company L’Andana could be transferred from the Moretti family to the De Santis family, signaling a possible expansion of the Meta group outside the Como area.
ITALIAN WINE AND OENOLOGY
Italian wine: prices falling and production costs rising. According to data from the Italian Wine Union, as of September 2026, consumer wine prices are expected to decline by 2.3% year-over-year, while general inflation is projected at 4.2%. Energy, gas, glass, transportation, logistics, wine products, and packaging continue to weigh on costs. The problem for businesses is that the price reduction is not generating a corresponding increase in sales volumes.
“Riserva” wine seeks a new identity. The Riserva category, historically associated with great Italian reds, is evolving. With the rise of single-vineyard wines and Additional Geographical Units, origin has become increasingly important over lengthy aging. This scenario could open up new opportunities, especially for Riserva white wines.
Marche: Rosés Take Center Stage. For the first time, two rosés from the Marche region have achieved the highest Tre Bicchieri award: La Calcinara’s Conero Rosato Mun ’25 and a Metodo Classico Rosé made from Sangiovese from LE Tempo. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Matelica also continue to perform strongly.
The Coppi family’s Primitivo di Gioia del Colle is among Bibenda’s Top 10. The Senatore DOP 2023 wine from the Coppi family has been included in Bibenda’s list of ten Italian wines. This is the first time a Gioia del Colle DOP Primitivo has received this recognition.
DoctorWine highlights single-varietal wines. In preparation for the presentation of the 2027 Essential Guide to Italian Wines, DoctorWine offers a selection of wines made 100% from a single grape variety, showcasing both native and international varieties present in Italian viticulture.
Quality-price ratio: is the traditional Italian advantage still sufficient? A key issue emerges in the debate over the positioning of Italian wine: price and ratings aren’t always sufficient to convey quality. Territory, category, style, and positioning are becoming increasingly important factors in consumer perception.
Sustainability: The vineyard cannot be described solely through “don’ts.” Avoiding the use of herbicides or systemic products is only part of sustainability. The debate is shifting toward a more comprehensive assessment of soil, water, carbon, energy, erosion, fertility, and biodiversity, considering the overall impact of agricultural practices.
Color influences expectations, but does not determine perceived quality. A study published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture analyzes wines made from disease-resistant hybrid grape varieties. Color can influence expectations before tasting, but the final judgment depends primarily on the overall sensory experience.
New EU Packaging Regulations: The implementation of the new European regulation on packaging and packaging waste poses new documentation and traceability requirements for bottles, corks, labels, and other materials. This issue is particularly sensitive for wines undergoing long aging, for which some components may have been purchased years ago.
Trentino: the Sustainability Report becomes operational. The Consorzio Vini del Trentino has presented its third Sustainability Report, covering the three-year period 2022-2025. The document covers the vineyard, winery, and market, and integrates GRI standards with SQNPI, VIVA, and Equalitas systems.
Gambero Rosso and Vicenza wines. Of the 49 Tre Bicchieri awarded in Veneto, according to the reported news, only one is from the Vicenza area: the Breganze Cabernet Due Santi 2022 Vigneto Due Santi. The limited number of recipients has fueled a local debate about the representativeness of the awards.
INTERNATIONAL AND MARKETS
Burgundy: Still wines slow, Crémant grows. In the 12 months ending July 2026, bottled sales of still Burgundy wines are expected to decline by 1.3%, while Crémant de Bourgogne grew by 6.5%. Including sparkling wines, overall sales are essentially stable.
The data confirms a broader market trend: greater interest in sparkling wines, whites, and more immediate wines, while some categories of structured reds are encountering greater difficulties.
Prosecco DOC and Grana Padano together in Europe The two Consortia are launching “Here’s to EU – Momento Perfetto,” a three-year promotional project in Germany, Poland, and Denmark, co-financed by the European Union.
Prosecco DOC starts with significant numbers: 667 million bottles sold in 2025, an estimated consumer value of over 3.6 billion euros and exports over 82%.

THE PICTURE OF THE DAY
Today’s news reveals a sector undergoing a full transformation.
On the one hand, production costs, margin pressure, and regulatory complexity are rising; on the other, consumption patterns are changing, and sparkling wines, whites, rosés, and wines offering greater immediacy are gaining ground.
At the same time, wineries are expanding their role: no longer just places of production, but entities that integrate hospitality, territory, culture, sustainability, and experience.
Communication is also changing. It’s no longer enough to simply explain how a wine is made: it’s becoming increasingly important to explain why that wine, that winery, and that terroir are worth choosing.
